The French periods we carry
Our collection typically spans Louis XV (rococo, curvilinear, marquetry), Louis XVI (neoclassical, restrained, fluted), Directoire and Empire (architectural, martial motifs), and 19th-century revivals. We also carry provincial pieces from Provence, Normandy and the Loire — walnut, cherry and oak in humbler forms, often more usable in a modern Indian home than their formal counterparts.
What to look for
Original French pieces show hand-cut dovetails, secondary timbers appropriate to the region (oak in Paris, walnut in Provence), oxidised original hardware, and — on gilded pieces — worn gilt on high points. Marquetry should be laid on a solid substrate, with the pattern reading crisply but not perfectly, since the veneer moves with humidity over two centuries.
Living with French antiques in India
French furniture responds well to Indian climate when it has been restored responsibly — waxed rather than heavily varnished, kept out of direct sun, and away from air-conditioning vents that dry timber. Every French piece leaving our gallery is prepared for Indian conditions and comes with care notes.
